Miss Ohio 2011: Media Blitz!

Huge congratulations to Miss Ohio 2011, Ellen Bryan.  She earned the Semi-finalist Interview award and the title on her third attempt as Miss Clayland 2010, having placed in the Top 5 as Miss Lake Festival 2008 and Miss Miami Valley 2009.  Ellen is a vocalist and recent graduate of Ball State University; she advocates Lightning Awareness, as her older sister suffers extreme disabilities from a strike.  Ellen is the second Miss Ohio in three years to be both a Miss Clayland, a former Miss Lake Festival and a resident of Mercer County.

Miss Ohio Becky Minger,
Swimsuit winners Meggie Wittman, Amber Bussa
& Alissa Brumbaugh (missing: Jenna Fowls)

Preliminary Wrap-up!
The past three nights of preliminary competition has been exciting, with no one becoming a double prelim winner.  Some of the choices came as a surprise to online commenters, but that will only make the Top 10 more interesting!

  • Two of the six winner are first year contestants, Jenna Fowls and Alissa Brumbaugh.
  • All three Swimsuit winners were blond.
  • All three Talent winners were singers.
  • Jenna and Amber share a host home.
  • Shannon and Cayla share a local E.D.
  • Cayla won the Talent award over Shannon at their local.
  • At their winning locals Heather Wells bested both Alissa and Meggie for the Swimsuit award; Amber won Swimsuit at her local.
  • Awards were not given at Sweeps, where Jenna was crowned, but she did win a Talent award a few weeks prior at Miss Muskingum Valley.
  • Flight Two's winners were first (Meggie in SS) and last (Jenna in Talent).
  • Flight One and Three's winners were all near the middle of their competition groups.
  • When asked their favorite phase, only two of the six answered with the competition for which they won preliminary awards! (Jenna and Cayla said Talent.)

Miss Ohio 2011: Prelim Night Three

Flight One (Buckeyes) - Gown & OSQ
Flight Two (Cardinals) - Swimsuit
Flight Three (Carnations) - Talent

Emcees - Heather McDonald & Becky Minger

Preliminary Awards will be given for
Swimsuit and Talent!

Swimsuits:

Note, most of these photos were taken at the contestants winning local pageant by Ross Clark. Exceptions are Jane Marie Covel and Marisa Buchheit; Jane's is from the local prior to her win and Marisa's is from Miss Ohio 2010, when she won a Swimsuit Preliminary award.  Can Marisa repeat last years luck, will Jenna be a double prelim winner or will someone else best them both?

Talents:

18. Miss Buckeye State - Ashley Bowman -
vocal "The World Above"

19. Miss Central Ohio - Sarah Hider
 vocal  "I Told You So"

20. Allison Goodwin - Miss Vacationland
 jazz dance "Sparkling Diamonds"

21. Kylie Johnson - Miss Muskingum Valley
 violin "Orange Minuet"

22. Alyssa Brumbaugh - Miss Miami Valley
 vocal "Nella Fantasia"

23. Heather Wells - Miss Maumee Valley
jazz dance "Baby, I'm a Star"

24. Cayla Hellwarth - Miss West Central Ohio
 vocal "Gira Con Me"

25. Devon Stansbury - Miss Lake Festival
ballet en pointe "Home to Me"

26. Priya Sharma - Miss Huron County
bollywood dance "Aaja Nachle"

None of these woman are previous state Talent Preliminary winners, but Alissa Brumbaugh has the opportunity to become a double prelim winner if she wins!  It will be a hard fought battle with strong performances likely to come from Heather Wells, Kylie Johnson, Cayla Hellwarth and others!

On another note, last year you voted Amber Bussa's stunning black evening gown with gold embellishments your second favorite gown of the pageant.  I noticed she wore it as a walk-on last night, so I can't wait to see what it's replaced with tonight!

I am hosting guests and thus was not able to watch the webcast; my opinions are limited to photographs.
I thought several evening and talent gowns illustrated that these ladies are seriously stepping up to the plate, in terms of their wardrobes at least!

Had I been able to watch the webcast, I'm pretty sure this would have been my absolute favorite moment! (Sorry contestants.)

It's Mike Minger, Miss Ohio's Dad and her long time E.D., Eric Wagener.  They appear to be parodying "Sisters," which Becky and her sister Leslie sing.  Obviously Mike and Eric are worthy Lifestyle & Fitness and Talent winners!  :)

Congrats to Prelim Night Two Winners!

Miss Ohio 2011: Prelim Night Two

Flight One (Buckeyes) - Swimsuit
Flight Two (Cardinals) - Talent
Flight Three (Carnations) - Gown & OSQ

Emcees - Kelly Creager & Becky Minger

Preliminary Awards will be given for
Swimsuit and Talent!

Swimsuits:

Most of these photos were taken at the local they won by Ross Clark, with some exceptions. Jessica Nelson assumed a title, but this is one of her last locals.  Ellen Bryan is hard to track down in a swimsuit! There were no photos from her local, nor could I find last year at Miss Ohio; unfortunately this picture is from Miss Ohio 2009. Speaking of 2009, that year at Miss Ohio Heather Waterman won a Preliminary Swimsuit Award, but tonight I'm betting on Amber Bussa or Courtney Monk!

Talent Selections:

9. Meggie Whittman -  Miss All*American City
  vocal "At Last"

10. Jane Marie Covel - Miss Greater Butler County
ballet en pointe "I See the Light"

11. Ashley Warholic - Miss Mansfield
ballet en point "Walz from Coppelia"

12. Alyssa Phillips - Miss Ohio River
 harp "Wind Beneath my Wings"

13. Alicia Huyghe - Miss Heart of Ohio
tap dance "Hey Pachuco"

14. Alyssa Hanson - Miss Fallen Timbers
 vocal "The Prayer"

15. Marisa Buchheit - Miss Greater Cleveland
 opera "Quando m'en vo"

16. Elissa McCracken - Miss Lima Square Fair
 piano "Cumina"

17. Jenna Fowls - Miss Mohican Valley

 vocal "Somewhere"

Last year Marisa Buchheit won a Talent Preliminary, although she's singing a different song, I won't be surprised if she does it again!

Who are your picks?

Shannon O'Neill

Alissa Brumbaugh
Shannon O'Neill

Alissa is a first-year contestant, whose pre-pageant online buzz is proving true!  Shannon is competing for a fourth time, having been 1st Runner-up last year and placing as a semifinalist her first and second tries.  She was a preliminary talent winner in 2009.

Miss Ohio 2011: Prelim Night One

Flight One (Buckeyes) - Talent
Flight Two (Cardinals) - Gown & OSQ
Flight Three (Carnations) - Swimsuit

Emcee - Roberta Camp-Albert & Becky Minger

Preliminary Awards will be given for
Swimsuit and Talent!

Swimsuits:
*Note, these photos were taken as much as 11 months ago, at each woman's local pageant. All but Devon and Kylie's pictures were captured by Ross Clark.  Click the collage to enlarge it.
This looks like a very competitive group to me, as I have four favorites: Kylie Johnson, Heather Wells, Cayla Hellwarth and Devon Stansbury!

Talent Selections:

1. Heather Waterman - Miss North Central Ohio
vocal "There You'll Be"

2. Jessica Nelson - Miss Cuyahoga County
 jazz dance  "Born This Way"

3. Courtney Monk - Miss Northwestern Ohio
 vocal "Astonishing"

4. Chelsi Howman - Miss North Coast
 banjo "Foggy Mountain Breakdown"

5. Amber Bussa - Miss Maple City
 broadway vocal "Roxie"

6. Shannon O'Neill - Miss Crystal Lake
 vocal "Blue Skies"

7. Alyssa Waldman - Miss Willard
 opera "Mein Herr Marquis"

8.  Ellen Bryan - Miss Clayand
 vocal "Circle of Life"

None of these women won a Talent preliminary last year, but Shannon O'Neill did in 2009.  Also look out for Alyssa Waldman's opera and I find Amber Bussa's "Roxie" thoroughly entertaining!
