Ohio's Outstanding Teen Results

The winner is... Ashley Miller, Miss Portsmouth's Outstanding Teen!

1st Runner-up: Lauren Hawkins, at large contestant
2nd Runner-up: Kelsey Barrett, Miss West Central Ohio's Outstanding Teen

Interview: Ashley Miller
Talent: Lauren Hawkins

Best of Luck to the Miss Ohio Outstanding Teen Program!

Tonight seven teens will vie for Kelsey Ballew’s title. They are:

Kellie Kulka, Miss Maumee Valley’s Outstanding Teen
Kellie is a 16 year old dancer from Toledo. Her platform is Right to Life.

Aujanna’ Million, Miss Butler County’s Outstanding Teen
“You Have Million Reasons to Succeed” is her platform. She is a 13 year old dancer from Middletown.

Kelsey Barret, Miss West Central Ohio’s Outstanding Teen
Kelsey’s title is literal, as she is the little sister of Miss West Central Ohio, Jessica Barret. She is a 13 year old vocalist from Wapakoneta; her platform is “Prevention of Malaria in Africa.”

Ashley Miller, Miss Portsmouth’s Outstanding Teen
Ashley is a 16 year old vocalist from Patriot who advocated Teen Abstinence.

Three other contestants are competing “at large.”

Shaylah Monnette is a 14 year old dancer from Marion. Her platform is “Jump Robe for the Heart.”

Lauren Hawkins advocates “B.E.A.R to be Different.” She is a 13 year old dancer from Middletown.

Kaitlin Bressler is a 16 year old vocalist from Springboro. Her platform is “Peer Support Groups for Young Grieving Children.”

The program starts at 7 p.m. on the Miss Ohio stage. Entertainers and emcees will be Miss Ohio Melanie Murphy, Ohio’s Outstanding Teen Kelsey Ballew, Ohio’s Princess Alexis Nelson and former Miss Ohio Marlia Fontaine.

The judges are Jo’D Herron, Denny Keller, Laura C. King, Kathleen Ricciardella and Jim Dawson.

Abby’s Take on Preliminary Night Three

Technical errors plagued me and many others trying to watch the Miss Ohio webcast on www.missohio.org last night. After telling a few interested friends and even an online news writer from my home county of Mercer (where Miss Lake Festival, Erica Gelhaus is also from) that they could watch last nights prelim live and Tuesday and Wednesday’s shows as archives for FREE, I was mortified to find a “paypal” icon glaring back at me when I logged on at 7:28! Luckily, the online news writer didn’t publish the information I had given him. I decided to go ahead and pay the $5 charge but I was not taken to the webcast. It all became very frustrating and very confusing but luckily I found refuge from a place that normally gets a bad rap- an anonymous message board. Several others were having the same problem and someone finally posted a working link. I have emailed officials and will hopefully have more information and answers about the webcast soon.

As for the show itself… I watched with my friend Jeff, who is not at all a pageant person, but yet, an interested observer of many forms of entertainment. He was not so impressed with the production, as it’s just not the kind of show a man in their late 20s enjoys. He shared the criticism that folks from across the country have expressed on a nation message board, that being, the little girls “lost in the TV” thing just doesn’t make sense. I handed him my program book, saying “read this, it helps.” He said, “Abby, do we really need a libretto to watch a pageant?” Ouch. Point well made.

The theme aside, I have to defend the performers, vocalists Shanon Woodward, Shana Teel and Emily Fitzpatrick are very good, as well as fiddle/violin player Dr. Laura Schumann. The rebel in me loves this photo of the quick onstage change during the opening number! (It’s funny because the contestants are strictly forbidden to “disrobe” during the Talent competition.)

The Contestants

As usual, all the ladies looked lovely in Evening Gown, but I have to admit I was a little under whelmed last night. The contestants looked beautiful, but I’m just so bored with some of the designs that we’ve seen a million times; I can’t wait for the designers to take a new direction! My friend Jeff liked the simplicity of Alyssa Hanson’s gown and admitted to being partial to white. Although the gown style is nothing new, I was impressed by Kristen Haas, and I am honestly not just saying that because I crowned her, I barely know the girl. I’m impressed because she is so tiny, I mean TINY, therefore she has to work three times as hard as everyone else to “own” the stage and not get swallowed up by it and I think she’s really doing that this year.

Talent last night felt like the battle of the Broadway divas! Ultimately Nanciann Strosnider won the prelim award for her very controlled rendition of “Happy Days are Here Again.” Because of her placement (last) and her very smooth and deliberate delivery she was my friend Jeff’s pick to win. I agreed “Fany-pants,” as we call her, did a great job, but Loren and I were pulling for my good friend Lauren Hogan. I had not seen her perform her new talent, “My Strongest Suit” from Aida prior to last night and I was blown away! It’s quite a contrast to “I Could Have Danced All Night” which she sang at locals. I thought she did a great job, and surely scored high. Being the only tap dancer in the competition, I’m sure Jillian Dansko’s fun routine also stood out to the judges.

Last night I abstained from selected a Swimsuit winner, as it was a very tough flight, much tougher than I thought it would be. Again, I think Swimsuit is the hardest thing to determine while watching online; Tuesday was also a great Swimsuit flight, but being there in person made it easy to narrow down. When forced to choose, Loren said Becky Minger, although he later clarified that a positive reaction he made via instant message was for Heather Lindsay, who ended up winning. By the time I noticed his message I thought it was about the next woman onstage, Christie Youssef. That’s not meant to be negative toward Christie, she ended up being my friend Jeff’s pick. I though Erica Gelhaus possibly had a chance to be a double preliminary winner, since she was already on the judges radar, and for the record, I’d give anything to have leg definition like Kasey Wilson!

Finally, in Onstage Question, I felt Jessica Barrett did a great job of explaining a very tangible aspect of her platform issue. So often women’s platforms and the questions they are asked about them lean toward ideals, emotions or theories, it was nice to hear someone talk about something practical; she actually informed the audience about something. Allie Krucek always presents herself solidly and even thought I think she ran out of time, I loved the passion Emily Cousino had. Like Jessica, she spoke directly, drawing a strong parallel between the requirement on fire extinguishers to the need for portable deliberators.

The night ended with the presentation of several awards, in addition to the Talent and Swimsuit Preliminaries. ***This post is still under construction, check back soon for the list of winners. ***

Pageant Press: Ashland County commissioner proposes to outgoing Miss Ohio

Miss Ohio Melanie Murphy said goodbye to one title Thursday night on the Miss Ohio stage. Moments later, Ashland County Commissioner Matt Miller knelt on one knee and asked the former Cavs dancer to take on another.

"The title is my wife ... Melanie Murphy," Miller said. "I love you with all my heart. Will you marry me? Through tears Murphy said, "Yes, I'll marry you Matt...

Miss Ohio officials called the marriage proposal a first in the history of the Miss Ohio stage as the show continued."

Vocalists and Novices Reign Supreme During Miss Ohio Prelims!

It’s notable that three of the five preliminary winners are first year competitors from closed local programs! As the term suggests “closed” locals are restricted to women in certain counties. Forgive my frankness, but women from closed programs typically do not do as well at Miss Ohio because they often come from communities that do not understand the caliber of competition at the state level. So, congratulations to Erica Gelhaus and the Miss Lake Festival program, Allison West and the Miss Ohio Valley program and Heather Lindsay and the Miss Hamilton program.

Erica Gelhaus won Talent on Wednesday night with an operatic aria and performed extremely well in all the phases of competition; this is very impressive considering it’s been nearly a year since she last was on a pageant stage. Her local, Miss Lake Festival, is closed only to women of Mercer County.

Miss Ohio Valley, Allison West, walked away with the Swimsuit award on Tuesday night. Allison competed with only eight others in a pageant also held nearly a year ago, which is closed to women of Belmont, Carrol, Columbiana, Harrison and Jefferson Counties.

Finally, Thursday night's Swimsuit winner, Heather Lindsay, also represents a closed local. Miss Hamilton is a newer program which is restricted to women of Butler, Clark, Hamilton, Madison, Montgomery, Preble and Warren Counties.

In contrast to the ladies above, the two other preliminary winners are Miss Ohio veterans representing “open” locals.

Friends Roberta Camp and Nanciann Strosnider are both making their third attempt at the Miss Ohio crown. Neither had won a preliminary award in years past.

Performing a Barbra Streisand favorite, Miss Lake Erie Nanciann Strosnider won Talent Thursday night. Miss Maple City Roberta Camp won Talent on Tuesday night with her gospel vocal “Blessed,” as well as Swimsuit on Wednesday.

Congratulations to Thursday Night's Prelim Winners, Heather Lindsay and Nanciann Strosnider!

Miss Hamilton, Heather Lindsay won tonight's Swimsuit flight and Miss Lake Erie, Nanciann Strosnider won Talent with her rendition of "Happy Days Are Here Again." Several other awards were given, but I haven't typed them up yet... Those awards and my thoughts are coming soon...

Congrats to all the ladies and best of luck to them in their Private Interviews tomorrow.

From Miss to Mrs…

Moments ago on the Miss Ohio stage, Melanie’s boyfriend, Matt, proposed to her after her heartfelt farewell speech. Congrats Mel! I have to admit, a little birdie tipped me off that may happen tonight.

As for the competition, it was much better than I thought it would be. Tuesday had a particularly tough Swimsuit flight and last night’s Talent was certainly a throw-down. But tonight I really didn’t know what to expect… I’m watching with my non-pageant friend, Jeff and Loren is watching from work and sending me instant messages… Our guesses are as follows…

Loren picked Becky Minger as the Swimsuit winner and Lauren Hogan for Talent. My friend Jeff, who admittedly does not know what he’s talking about, is guessing Christie Youssef for Swimsuit and Nanciann Strosnider for Talent. As for me, I of course hope my friend Lauren Hogan wins; I thought she really worked it. Swimsuit featured several competitive women and considering the difficulty in judging it via the internet I’m going to abstain.

The Miss Ohio Webcast Is No Longer Free!

I am so disappointed, the Miss Ohio webcast is no longer free! A friend of mine is already out grabbing us a pizza to eat while we watch it, so I’ll go ahead and pay the $5, but lots of people will surely be angry!

I guess $5 is not that much money, but in a world of things like YouTube and endless online access, not to mention the fact it was free the first two nights, the Miss Ohio website really should have given more notice about this. I feel bad because I told folks in my hometown area/ the Miss Lake Festival community that it was free…

Pageant Press: Opera singer talent winner...

A newcomer to the Miss Ohio stage, Gelhaus, 19, of St. Henry, was honored with the talent award..."I just warmed up before I did it tonight and went out there and had fun," she said.

Making her third trip to Miss Ohio, Camp, 23, was chosen for the swimsuit award...to become Miss Ohio, she will now have to overcome the "curse" of being a double preliminary winner. "They say that often the double preliminary winners would not walk away with the title but I'm really here for the job..." Camp said.

Abby’s Take on Preliminary Night Two

As I mentioned below, Loren and I watched Wednesday night’s competition at www.missohio.org. (Check out the site; you can rewatch the past two nights any time, they're listed as archives!) Of course, it’s unbelievably better in person, but the web access is still great.

Some aspects of the production changed, such as the theme from Titanic instead of the old Hollywood tap number, and a disco finale instead of Grease. This is a very nice touch and I’m sure the variety is much appreciated by the parents and E.D.’s who are there every night.

And if you ever wonder what it's like from the contestant's and entertainer's point of view, now you know thanks to the great photo above.

The Contestants

While the ladies glided across the stage in Evening Gown, Loren and I sat at the kitchen table enjoying grilled chicken and corn on the cob, which was even odder than being in the audience. Again, most of the women had new gowns. I absolutely loved Jillian Dansko’s strapless animal print gown! Nanciann Strosnider floated across the stage in a gorgeous white gown that has already been proven crown worthy in Nebraska.

I predicted Night Two would be a very tough talent night, and though folks from across the country who were watching and chatting online were not hugely impressed, I know that in person it must have been amazing. Ericka Gelhaus performed an outstanding aria in a lovely rose colored ball gown to win the Preliminary Talent Award. I’m sure this is very exciting for Melissa and the Miss Lake Festival crew. Hopefully my hometown newspaper will write an article about her, and if so I’ll be sure to share the link. As usual, I was impressed by Karissa Martin’s rendition of “I Feel Pretty.” This song is decidedly overdone in pageantland, but that doesn’t matter when it’s done well. Christie Youssef’s harp performance was also quite competitive, thanks to its uniqueness and seemingly high level of difficulty, in the opinions of Loren and I. Finally, Kasey Wilson always does a nice job; her new song was very soothing but perhaps not engaging enough. While the title probably doesn’t ring a bell, the melody is quite familiar, I am almost positive it’s used on a national ad campaign, but I can’t recall for what… a credit card commercial perhaps…?

Swimsuit was probably the most difficult to judge via the internet broadcast. Despite a slight stumble, Rachel Maris looked great. Loren and I also liked Kristen Haas and Roberta Camp. Roberta and her red two piece won the Swimsuit Preliminary Award, making her a double preliminary winner! Allison West and Ericka Gelhaus have the chance to become the same as they compete in Talent and Swimsuit in the final prelim, respectively.

As for Onstage Question, as usual Elyse Healey was very confident. Emcee Mark Schnitkey accidentally called Lauren Hogan “Logan;” I thought her humble correction really showed her personality, unlike women in the past who have come off rather snotty in the same situation. Finally, I love both Andrea Andrycik’s platform and the passion with which she speaks about it.

So… that’s my take… again, please don’t be mad if I didn’t mention your contestant, or if you disagree with my opinion.

Congratulations to Wednesday Night's Prelim Winners, Roberta Camp and Ericka Gelhaus!

Loren and I just finished watching the second night of competition from my laptop. I am so impressed that Miss Ohio is streaming a live, free feed of the show! While the quality suffers significantly, it was great to watch comfortably from home, with the ability to chat throughout and read what fans from across the country thought on message boards.

As for the winners, they were both at the top of our lists! We forced ourselve to guess one winner- I said Karissa Martin and Roberta Camp as the winners, with Ericka and Kristen Haas as a close seconds. Loren guessed Ericka Gelhaus and Kristen Haas as winners, with Christie Youssef and Roberta as alternates.

Congrats to all the ladies!

For now, I'm a bit bummed that I'm here at home and not there competing. :( So I'm going to try to convince Loren to go get some ice cream!... More commentary soon...
