Miss Ohio 2009: FINALE LIVE BLOG!

Wow, they should have cut out a production number or two and shown that blooper reel instead! That was fantastic and THAT is the side of the women that people need to see.

And now Johnny is killing time and singing "Light House," one he always does and does well! They pulled the contestants back off stage and Johnny's filling time, while you could still hear Mark over his mic saying "I hope I don't have to rush through these awards... my watch must be fast." LOL! Gotta love live TV.

Our Predictions:

Loren and I agree on the following placement:

Winner - Nanciann
1st RU - Jenna
2nd RU - Becky
3rd RU - Erica
4th RU - Ellen

We feel like Jenna and Becky could be swapped. I would love to see Becky win, but I think Nanciann's consistency could do it for her. Honestly, this is the best Top 5 in a long time.

YAY IT'S JOHNNY!!!

ON STAGE QUESTION

Nanciann -
"Should the USA have the right to dictate if countries have nuclear weapons?" Answer: Not solely... United Nations.
Fantastic answer!

Becky -
"Is it appropriate to provide foreign aid in such poor economic times in the US?"
She did answer the question, but it was not as concise as it could have been.

Erica -
"Should the government set rules for in vetro fertilization?"
Answer: It should have a government vote.
She spoke well, but the answer was extremely generic.

Jenna
- Something about deporting immigrants...
Answer: Protect boarders and evaluate each case.
Strong answer.

Ellen -
"Is it time for the USA to have national health care?"
Answer: Yes, but it can't all be the same.
I felt like she spoke in circles.

OFFICIAL TOP 5

Jenna
Becky
Nanciann
Ellen
Erica
________

Me: I'm so nervous!

Loren: Yeah, sit in the audience once when someone you care about it up there... What the hell is that [toward an old ladies foot during the Primrose commercial].

________

Our Top 5 predictions

Nanciann
Becky
Jenna
Heather

Erica OR Katie

________

SWIMSUIT

With all due respect to the prelim winners, Loren and I were most impressed by Nanciann, Jenna and Heather.

TALENT

Nanciann - I like her hair down better, but her vocals aren't as strong as her prelim night. I'm sure she was in a crazy rush to the stage being first. Loren wasn't impressed, but I'm a big Nanciann fan.

Katie - She's really on tonight and looks like she's having a blast on stage. Again, Loren wasn't wowed, but he's a tough judge.

Becky - I love the way this song starts, allowing her to be very expressive. Over the webcast the high notes were still a little pinched, but overall I think the vocals were better than her prelim performance! Loren thought it was great, but like me he's bias.

Erica - Again, a solid performance, with great vocals, as you would expect from a prelim winner and vocal performance major! Loren loved her dress and said she "killed it, as I expected her to."

Kylie - Oh, I didn't realize she pulled the flower out of her hair, I thought it had fallen during her prelim. What's the point? Other than that, I though tonight she was worlds better with much more energy!

Jenna - Flippin' Fantastic! I love her! The song seems really short, but another great performance from Jenna. Loren says it's the strongest he's ever heard her.

Ellen - Yes, Maxwell, Hollywood is a very expensive place to live. LOL! Like I said before, this songs fits Ellen; she doesn't have the strongest vocals onstage, but it's cute.

Sasha - I wish she would have done something with her hair, a low ponytail maybe. I think she's charming and I absolutely had her in my Top 10. However, tonight she sounds incredibly nervous.

Heather - She poured a lot of emotion into her dance tonight. I think it was even better than her prelim night and her hair and makeup look nicer too. Loren liked it, although he's not a dance fan.

Shannon - She's so polished! In the past I recall not liking that gown, but tonight I find myself loving it. Her performance is very solid; she's good at what she does.

Loren and I agree Jenna and Erica were the top two talents tonight. He says Becky's a close third, and I say Katie...

________

GOWN

I'm not writing about each, because that would be redundant. I'm also on a live webchat with Loren; we liked the first three the best (Nanciann, Katie and Becky). We only really disagreed on Sasha, I think she's adorable and Loren, well, via the webcast thought the liquid beading looked a bit... suggestive.
________

OFFICIAL TOP 10

Nanciann Strosnider
Katie Camp
Becky MInger
Erica Gelhaus
Kylie Johnson
Jenna Wilson
Ellen Bryan
Sasha Eby
Heather Wells
Shannon O'Neill

I think this is a good Top 10; however, I thought Whitney and Kristen would have been in there.
The Miss Ohio Finale begins at 8 p.m.! Watch live on the Ohio News network (on TV) or the webcast HERE.

Best of luck to everyone! I don't have the courage to post my Top 10 predictions, but I will say that with no double prelim winners, I highly doubt all six of them will make the cut and I think it's going to come down to Becky and Nanciann! But who knows!

Pageant Press: Contestants try to relax before tonight's big event

Contestants try to relax before tonight's big event
Lou Whitmire
Mansfield News Journal

MANSFIELD -- Miss Lake Erie Jenna Wilson, of Zanesville, said she must be lucky.

Wilson, 22, captured the talent award Friday during the third round of Miss Ohio preliminaries at the Renaissance Theatre.

She also won a preliminary talent award last year.

"There were so many talented women in my flight, I didn't know what to think. I just went out there and did my best," Wilson said. She sang a powerful rendition of "Maybe This Time" from "Cabaret."

Miss Miami Valley Katie Camp, 22, of Newark, was the preliminary swimsuit winner.

She said she did a lot of running and a lot of sit-ups.

"That's about it. I eat a lot," she said.

Both winners said they are ready for tonight, when the new Miss Ohio will be crowned.

Wilson said it is really easy to get stressed out on the final competition day.

"We all have our iPods, we try to relax. We have our pillows so we can lay our heads down, just try to rest ourselves so we can perform our best if we do make the top 10, because it's anyone's game. We never know with a different set of judges every year what they are looking for," Wilson said.

John P. Kunkel III, the Miss Ohio producer of 25 years, was honored Friday night with a surprise visit by longtime Miss Ohio entertainer Johnny Porazzo, who sang his trademark song "Lighthouse." Porazzo will perform again tonight.

Pageant officials also surprised Kunkel, bringing back to the stage former Miss Ohio entertainer Melissa Barber.

Barber told Kunkel she became a producer and director of musical shows because of him.

Reigning Miss Ohio Karissa Martin gave her traditional farewell, singing and dancing for the audience. During her farewell video, she said to look for her on Broadway and thanked everyone for making the past year one of the best of her life. She logged more than 30,000 miles on her car traveling throughout Ohio.

Board members Tim O'Guinn and Jeff Delianides announced the latest inductee into the Miss Ohio Hall of Fame.

The honor went to former Miss Ohio contestant, the late Theresa Ann Wagner, daughter of Jim and Drena McCurdy of Lexington.

Drena McCurdy, Miss Ohio board vice president, started attending the Miss Ohio show with her daughter when Theresa was just 16. The girl went on to become a veteran Miss Ohio contestant.

McCurdy's family has donated many scholarships to the program since her daughter died in 1992 in a plane crash.

During the fast-paced evening, WNCI 97.9 FM Columbus radio personality Maxwell Jones entertained via two large TV screens from backstage, joking with those contestants about to perform.

"I'm the guy who keeps your kids from doing their homework," he said of his midnight radio show, "Maxwell & Company."

The new Miss Ohio will be crowned today at 8 p.m. She will win a $10,000 scholarship and a chance to compete at Miss America in Las Vegas.

She will make her first public appearance Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Richland Mall in Ontario.

Some of you didn't like Karissa's multi-colored walk-on gown for Miss America (seen below in a production number this week), but what do you think now that Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza, is wearing it for a fashion shoot?!

Miss Ohio 2009: Preliminary Night Three Winner's Photos

The following shots are from Timothy Russell, of the amazing Miss Mansfield website, and Christine Walsh-Newton. Thanks to both of them for getting their work edited and online so quickly tonight! Also, I just read on Facebook that part of the new Miss Ohio's prize package is a photo shoot with Christine.

Pageant Poll: Miss Ohio 2009 Predictions!

While we're waiting for photos to surface, lets start the ambiguous polling! I'm not comfortable posting all the contestants names and asking, who will win? I think that could be hurtful. Doing it this way is still insightful and fun:

Prelim winner:

Flight:

Talent:

Seniority:

Hair color:

Miss Ohio 2009: Preliminary Night Three Results

Swimsuit - $400
Katie Camp - Miss Miami Valley

Talent - $700
Jenna Wilson - Miss Lake Erie

With Katie's win, I can say that five out of the six preliminary winners this year at Miss Ohio are currently, or have held, titles I held as a contestant. Four out of six of the prelim winners hail from the greater Northwestern Ohio area. Does that make Jenna the odd woman out in my six degrees of pageant separation? No. She was my last Miss Ohio roommate!

Jenna's win marks the sixth consecutive preliminary award for the Miss Lake Erie program, which I has only been around for seven years! Correct me if I'm wrong, but ED James Grimes' impressive track record goes something like this: 2009: Jenna Wilson - Talent; 2008: Kasey Wilson - Talent, Swimsuit, 3rd RU; 2007: Nanciann Strosnider - Talent, 4th RU; 2006: Leslie Ondrey - Talent, Swimsuit, 4th RU; 2005: Marlia Fontaine - Swimsuit, Miss Ohio; 2004: Amanda Beagle - Talent, Miss Ohio; 2003: Bryn Hough - Top 10.
