Abby’s Take on Preliminary Night One

First of all, it was so great to see my Miss Ohio family again. I stayed with the same family and had the same chaperone all five years; thank you again Brenda, Terry and Ginny. I miss you! This year they have Miss Maumee Valley Kristen Haas and Miss Hamilton Heather Lindsay. It was also great to see Paige, my favorite junior assistant and her dad, Jim, of the stage crew. I wanted to say “hey” to all the crew, but I know they had a long day, with more work to do after the show to prepare for the next…

I was surprised at how quickly the theatre cleared out after the show, but I did get to briefly chat with a few of my readers. I’m glad everyone is logging on and enjoying! The realization of how popular my blog is does make me a bit hesitant to share my opinions… Just keep in mind that I don’t mean to offend anyone; these are just my humble opinions, on my personal blog.

The Show

Opening night is always hard, and I have to say, we were a bad audience; we didn’t give the performers or contestants much to feed off! The show opens with a Cirque de sole style miming clown, who then helps the contestants up the stairs from the middle isle. The ladies don’t introduce themselves live, but rather a pre-recorded video plays on the large onstage screen. I like the concept, and I’m a bit jealous, as that’s something I would have done well, but the ladies just walk across the stage and wave while their video plays. I feel bad for the contestants who have to exit stage right, thus barley giving them time to make eye contact with the judges.

I really enjoyed the Dreamgirls opening, as well as a tap dance number in which two dancers performed the same routine as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers (I think); the video of the Hollywood legends played on the screen behind them. Later in the show a singer, electric fiddle player and tap dancers performed a high energy country number. In my opinion, the dancers red costumes with white fringe and blue detailing were hideous and I just can’t stand country music, especially hoe-down style. But, I can’t deny that they were all fantastic. The gentleman could sing, the dancers were great and the fiddle player was outstanding! That was followed by what some will surely call the “infamous” “These Boots are Made for Walkin’” number. I thought it was cute. None of the women dressed too scandalously, although there were a few who probably should not have shown their midriff. I’m not opposed to doing so; Melanie and I both did for last years' production numbers, I’m just saying some women looked great, while others should only show that when they have to in Swimsuit competition. Also, some women did not wear boots and those with them looked cuter.

The other production number is simply a walking pattern in which the ladies wear a spare evening gown. That means the only dance routine the contestants had to learn was for “These boots…” I am so jealous! On behalf of the contestants, thank you to whoever made that decision! Another props goes out to the vocalists. Of course, I’m bias of my former Miss Ohio roomie, Emily Fitzpatrick, but I really felt she and the other entertainers delivered quality performances. The complaint I do share with others is that the show itself is rather disjointed…

Every year the Miss Ohio production seems to be a medley of songs loosely connected by a generic theme. This year the theme is more specific, but the song choices are more disjointed. The production is called “CS” for channel surfing. Throughout the night hosts Mark Schnitkey and Miss Ohio Melanie Murphy take on news personas and report that two little girls were sucked into their television by some unknown monster. The production numbers are therefore supposed to be snippets of what you would see if you’re channel surfing and between songs the two girls (played by Theresa-Ann Jedra and Justice Stanford) come on stage and do a short “bit.” Again, they’re supposed to be lost inside the TV and they joke about various reality TV shows. Some of the jokes were actually pretty funny, but I don’t think most of the audience got them. Mark and Melanie did a good job playing news reporters and I was quite impressed with Melanie’s commitment to a character for parts when she had to act. But, going from Dreamgirls, to country music to Grease just didn’t make a ton of sense unless you took the time to read the page in the program book which explains it. And while I’m on a negative rant… I hated that Evening Gown competition was put first this year. I know it was always really hard to quickly change from your gown into your interview suit for Onstage Question, but going from the excitement of the opening number into the slow music and elegance of Evening Gown competition really messes up the flow.

The Contestants

As for the ladies… Everyone looked really great and the “buzz” this year is that the competition is wide open.

Almost all the women modeled different Evening Gowns than what they had at their locals. Karissa Martin probably got the biggest reaction from me because here tan and teal gown so perfectly complimented her skin tone and hair color (although the photo below does not capture the "wow"). My boyfriend Loren liked the bold orange gowns worn by Heather Linsday and Sophia Davis. Kasey Wilson gets the award for making the audience gasp with the low back and high slit on her white gown (which I believe she wore this fall at Miss Ohio USA).

Jessica Barrett started the talent competition off strong with “Popular” from Wicked. There’s no denying that was a great song selection for her and that she is just too adorable! Allie Krucek and Kristen Haas were the only dancers in the flight and both gave good performances, but it’s hard for dancers to beat singers, especially performances like Roberta’s. Roberta Camp won the Preliminary Talent Award; she seemed to be the clear winner to most and Loren and I agreed.

Further, ‘Berta was one of the only women last night who completely embodied confidence, whereas most of the women were showing their first night jitters. I also want to mention that just as dancers do that half dance/half walking thing on and off the stage, singers also need to carry the mood of their song and/or character on and off. Don’t wait until the music starts!

Last night’s Swimsuit flight was one of the toughest I’ve seen in a while! All of the ladies really looked great. Of course, I’m partial to my friend Lauren Hogan, but Loren and I thought Andrea Andryscik would win the prelim. That honor ended up going to the first contestant in the flight, Allison West. It’s not easy to win Swimsuit in that position, but after I thought about it, I remembered that I had leaned to Loren and jealously said, “well, cellulite hasn’t found her yet, has it!?”

And, how could I almost forget, Onstage Question. I’ve never met Christie Youssef, but after hearing her speak about Domestic Violence, I understand why she’s done very well in the past at Miss California. Domestic Violence is, of course, her platform; the fact that the questions were about each women’s platform had to be a relief to the first contestant in the flight, Becky Minger. It’s hard enough to be first, but last year Becky (in the same position) was the first to field an unexpected current events question. Speaking of current events, I greatly enjoyed the humor Kasey Wilson enfused while talking about her drunk driving prevention platform and our troubled Hollywood starlets; she was really able to show her personality.

So… that’s my take… again, please don’t be mad if I didn’t mention your contestant, or if you disagree with my opinion. Best of luck to all the ladies tonight, I’ll be watching on my laptop from my super comfy couch!

While last night was a strong Swimsuit night, I’d have to say tonight’s battle will be over the Talent Award. Classically trained vocalists Erica Gelhaus, Karissa Martin and Kasey Wilson all have a great chance. As for Swimsuit, Allie Krucek, Rachel Maris and Roberta Camp are my guesses for the win.

Congratulations to Tuesday's Prelim Winners, Roberta Camp and Allison West!

Despite being the first contestant in her flight, Miss Ohio Valley, Allison West wowed the judges in her teal two-piece and won the Swimsuit Preliminary Award. Miss Maple City, Roberta Camp, was last in her flight and exemplified the phrase “save the best for last…” with her award winning rendition of the gospel song “Blessed.” [Photos above by Jason J. Molyet]

Loren and I did decide to head to Mansfield at the last possible moment… I’m glad we did, but it was a very odd experience for me. I had never been a Miss Ohio audience member before tonight and would quite frankly rather be onstage! Below are a few photos were took after the pageant concluded. More commentary tomorrow… for now, I am TIRED!

Preliminary Night One is Here!

I can’t believe Miss Ohio is here again.. It’s really weird for me that I’m not there. For the past five years, going to Miss Ohio was a normalcy for my parents and I; aging out brings a barrage of emotions… sadness, relief, anger, jealousy, regret… but that’s another post for another day, I’m too tired right now! I awoke at 4 a.m. to co-host a morning radio show, then filmed TV commercials until 1 p.m. Loren and I have not yet decided if we’re buzzing to Mansfield for the first night of competition.

Since tonight is indeed preliminary night one, below are contestant breakdowns I compiled in a moment of boredom a month ago, but didn’t want to post until most of the contestants were away from internet access. Scroll and enjoy... (and of course, leave comments with any corrections.)

Miss Ohio Photos- Day Three

Today was Miss Ohio parade day in Mansfield. I have to admit, I came to hate parades thanks to pageants! Hopefully this year’s ladies had a wonderful time… CLICK HERE for all of Paul’s great pictures!

Miss Ohio Production Spoiler Alert!!!

The opening number will be the Dreamgirls theme song, for which all the ladies were provided with the fab gown Allison West is wearing on the left. The Swimsuit production number is to the song “These Boots Are Made for Walking;” the contestants supplied their own *tasteful* Daisy Duke outfits.

I am so excited that former Miss Marion Popcorn Festival and Miss Central Ohio, Emily Fitzpatrick will be one of the lead entertainers along with Melanie and Shana Teal! Emily was my roommate my third year and she is amazing! But she's changed her looks since the last time she was on the Miss Ohio stage, check out her short sassy new do on the right.

Miss Ohio Photos- Day Two

On the left, Miss Ohio, Melanie Murphy, hands out awards after the Miss Ohio 5K on Saturday morning. I am so disappointed that none of the contestants ran this year! :(

Best of Luck the Miss Ohio Contestants!

This is probably too late, as the women may already be in a hotel in Mansfield, or perhaps franticly packing! Oh well...

While there are women that I know better than others, I hope everyone has a wonderful week.

***If contestants, family, friends or E.D.’s have the ability and desire to email me photos or updates from Miss Ohio week, I would love to share them here, either anonymously or listing you as a “correspondent,” like Paul lists me on Miss Ohio News.***

Some Tips for the laidies from a Miss Ohio message board:

*Take a sewing kit with thread colors that match your wardrobe.
*Drink plenty of water.
*Label EVERYTHING.
*Take something to read or do while in the theatre, like platform information or thank you notes.
*Resist the temptation to gossip.
*Be nice to everyone and remember most of the crew and all of the chaperones and hostesses are VOLUNTEERS.
*Take a sweatshirt or blanket to the theatre, it’s always really cold.

My Tips:

*Don’t let anything intimidate you! Women who have been to Miss Ohio before will know each other and the volunteers. I remember feeling so lost and out-of-the-loop my first two years, but remember, none of that matters!

*The judges only know what you have shown them! Don’t let your confidence dwindle because of things happening behind the scenes, or worry over a difficult phase of competition yet to come.

*Eat citrus and drink tea, especially if you’re a singer. The production staff runs fog machines through the week, all the time. That, and the bitter temperature of the theatre are awful on your voice, so wear a scarf, drink tea and water and eat oranges and pineapple.

*Take what you need to feel confident, even though they tell you to pack light! I remember feeling really uncomfortable my first year in the rehearsal clothes, which are also worn to some public events. I’m just not a white Capri and tennis shoes kind of girl. Even though your looks during rehearsal and those events do NOT matter, your self-esteem through out the week does! My last few years I took tons of cute shoes, belts, scarves, purses and casual jewelry to my host home so I could match whatever color rehearsal T-shirts they gave us. If I feel like I look cute, I’m more confident and to be successful at Miss Ohio you must be confident and upbeat all week long. Also, my opinion is that if you want the job of Miss Ohio you should already be dressing and acting the party, all the time.

*Encourage your fans to meet and get along with your roommates fans; if they’re already together your chaperones job becomes easier and you and your roommate can spend more time with them.

*STAY OFF THE MESSAGE BOARDS WHILE YOU’RE AT MISS OHIO!

*Take headphones and music to the Talent rehearsal so you can listen to that instead of focusing on your competitor’s talents. Watching their talents makes you most vulnerable to comparing yourself and yours “chances of winning” against others. You have to stay in the theatre during talent rehearsal, but you can turn your head and focus on something else.

*Just get naked! It’s the STATE pageant, there’s no time for modesty. You will have to quickly change in front of others, and more than likely walk in on someone putting on a spray tan in the bathroom or something… Don’t get flipped out.

*Don’t take the yelling personally. The staff at Miss Ohio have a lot to take care of and there will be moments of stress. Do not allow that tension to affect you. When you are reprimanded as a group for something like being late, messy or caty, don’t take it personally. Just make sure you are doing what you’re supposed to, follow the rules and don’t become intimidated or lose confidence when Sharon or your chaperone gets tough. That's the last thing they want.

*Take photos of friends and family to tape to the wall around your area in the dressing room.

*Honestly just be yourself! It’s so cliché, but true… and I don’t only mean in front of the judges, but also with the other women and volunteers. Don’t be polite to a fake degree to the chaperones, or overly enthusiastic at events; don’t participate in conversations or attitudes you don’t enjoy or naturally embody just to hang out with other contestants. Just be yourself and you’ll find other people that compliment you.

Sunday I briefly interviewed Miss Northwestern Ohio, Becky Minger, during FOX Toledo’s broadcast of the Children’s Miracle Network Celebration. My job at the station is not as a reporter, but given my pageant experience and the irony that I asked Becky to join my CMN Hospital tour without knowing that she had already contacted them about participating in the Celebration, it made sense for me to be on camera with her. She did a great job.

[Above Becky and I pose with my co-host at The Docks, FOX Toledo’s Chief Meteorologist, Mike Morrison.]

Also, check out
Miss Maple City, Roberta Camp and Miss Clayland, Allie Krucek's blogs for photos of their CMN Celebration involvement in Columbus and Akron.

While Becky and I were at The Docks for the Celebration, Miss All*American City, Lauren Hogan, was just across the Maumee River in downtown Toledo for the Heart Walk. If you’re saying, “but I didn’t think that was her platform…” stop scratching your head. While her platform is not directly associated with the AHA, it does support overall health and wellness, thus her participation.

Miss Ohio 2007 Schedule

It’s hard to believe, but Miss Ohio 2007 is finally here! The twenty-one local titleholders will arrive in Mansfield this Friday, June 8th for a nine day stay culminating in the crowning of a new Miss Ohio!

The contestants are paired as roommates and live in the homes of local volunteer hostesses. During the day each pair are chauffeured about and looked after by volunteer chaperones as they attend various community events, appearances, rehearsals and of course, competition in the Renaissance Theatre in downtown Mansfield. Every year Miss Ohio week changes slightly; read below for the inside scoop of what the ladies will be doing this year:

FRIDAY JUNE 8, 2007

The “official contestant arrival” has been different the past few years; this year it is returning to the Richland Mall. At 11 a.m. the contestants will arrive, presenting themselves in summer outfits of their choice to meet with the press, sign their photo on the large Ohio cut-out and sign autographs for the public.

After briefly setting into their host home, contestants will have a reception at 3:15 p.m. at the Richland Carousel. This is very exciting addition to the schedule, as the Carousel is a wonderful Mansfield attraction, but it has not been incorporated in Miss Ohio week for at least the past five years.

After an hour at the Carousel the ladies will have dinner at the K.E. McCartney building, provided by Mansfield Mayor, Lydia Reid. The contestants will have changed into a more casual outfit while at their host home, as their first day conclude with the Miss Ohio Festival downtown from 5 to 9 p.m. They will introduce themselves to the public and sign autographs.

SATURDAY JUNE 9, 2007

Day two kicks off bright and early with the Miss Ohio 5k at the Mansfield Lahm Airport. Each year only a contestant or two participates. I ran last year and wished I had participated sooner.

Contestants who do not run in the 5K will be taken to the theatre to move their competition wardrobe and belongings into the dressing room, meet the crew and begin rehearsing! The theatre will be closed to the public and the women will have a long day of learning production number choreography and walking patterns, with meal breaks provided by Pizza Hut and Coney Island.

At 6 p.m. the ladies will get a change of scenery as they go elsewhere to record background vocals and swimsuit and talent introductions. Miss Ohio is a large production and it is necessary to use the contestants to record background vocals for the musical numbers. It can be a long process, but the past few years in has gone well. Of course, it always goes well for the non-singers who find a place in the back to take a nap! Additionally, the contestants record a first-person explanation of their talent presentation, which is then played as they take the stage for the Talent competition. Each contestant also records a voice-over which is played with the music they selected to walk to for the Swimsuit competition; last year that voice-over explained the song selection.

SUNDAY JUNE 10, 2007

The first half of Sunday of Miss Ohio Week has been the same for the past five years and this year is no different. The ladies will dress in festive parade apparel and enjoy a very early, private lunch at Applebee’s. Around noon they will travel downtown to quickly sign autographs for local Girl Scouts before the Miss Ohio Parade, which begins at 2 p.m.

For unknown reasons the women will not be creating a “Show Me Your Shoe” this year. (Inspired by the former Atlantic City Miss America parade, for at least the past five years Miss Ohio contestants were asked to decorate a shoe to represent something about themselves. Some shoes could only be carried, while others were actually worn; during the parade the crowd would yell “Show Me Your Shoes!” Just prior to the parade the shoes were even judged.) Even thought my shoe won my second year, I have to say this is such a great change! Amidst all the other time consuming elements of preparing for Miss Ohio I was always so frustrated and annoyed to also have a craft project to complete!

Throughout the week contestants are strictly chaperoned and despite the public nature of a parade, Sunday is no exception. When contestants reach the end of the parade they are escorted onto a platform to watch the rest of it; at the parade’s conclusion they are quickly whisked away to the Elks for one of my favorite meals of the week.

More staff introductions and a closed rehearsal take place from 5:15 p.m. until 9 or 10ish.

MONDAY JUNE 11, 2007

After a fun weekend with a festival and parade, a competitive reality sinks in with a closed full dress rehearsal on Monday morning from 9 to 11 a.m. After a great lunch at Chinatown the ladies are rushed back to the theatre for more rehearsing until 4 p.m.

From 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. the contestants become celebrity waitresses at local Applebee’s restaurants. This is, of course, open to the public, but there’s no guarantee that a contestant will be able to wait on, or spend very much time with her friends, family and local directors who come to the restaurant. The ladies return to the theatre by 7 p.m. to end the day with even more rehearsal.

TUESDAY JUNE 12, 2007

For the first time, the competition begins on Tuesday! This makes it extremely important for the ladies to be focused while rehearsing on Sunday night and Monday.

Tuesday morning is also the first day of pageant week which the theatre has been open, allowing friends and family to watch rehearsal from restricted areas.

At 9:30 a.m. the first seven contestants (The Catan Fashion flight) will head to the theatre for their Talent competition dress rehearsal.
It is important that the women do their hair, make-up and “go all-out” for this rehearsal, as photos will be taken and the women will have five minutes between their two run-throughs to consult with a pre-designated person who has watched from the audience.

At 11:30 a.m. the theatre closes to the public and all the contestants meet at Walnut Lounge for lunch. From 1 to 3:30 p.m. a final dress rehearsal takes place. At 4 p.m. local executive directors serve cook-out style food prepared by Park Avenue Catering and then contestants begin getting ready for the first night of competition! Prior to the shows start the contestants walk across the stage with their hostesses and chaperones who are introduced.

The competition begins at 7:30 p.m. with Catan Fashion flight competing in Talent; contestants 8 through 14 (Newman Technology flight) will compete in Evening Wear and On-Stage Question while the last seven contestants (Constance Care Home Heathcare flight) will work it in the Swimsuit competition.

Preliminary Awards are given to the highest scoring contestants in Talent and Swimsuit. Those women are rushed to a press conference while the other contestants quickly change back into rehearsal clothes and chaotically make their way into the audience with their chaperone to visit with family and friends for 10 to 15 minutes.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 14, 2007

On Wednesday morning (9:30 a.m.) contestants 8 through 14 (Newman Technology flight) will head to the theatre for their talent rehearsals. The theatre is open until 11:30 a.m.

At 10:15 a.m. the contestants, dressed in suits or appropriate summer outfits, will walk from the theatre to the Holiday Inn next door for the annual Mansfield Noon Optimist Club luncheon. In years past this has been a ticketed event, allowing friends, family and local directors to spend some time with their contestant.

From 1 to 5 p.m. the contestants will have a closed dress rehearsal; to the chagrin of women competing in swimsuit, supper for the evening is served in the theatre by Olive Garden.

New this year, the contestants will also walk across the stage when their local directors are introduced during the pre-show. While I agree that E.D.’s need to be recognized, this is inconvenient for contestants because to walk both chaperones and hostesses and E.D.s across that stage contestants must line up right outside one of the stage doors. Last year breezy and hot conditions caused sweatiness, messed up hair and watery eyes that smudged make-up, not to mention contestants must be ready about 20 minutes early. (Yes, there are a few minutes to fix things before the opening number kicks off, but if your eyes water in the hot sun like mine... you understand!)

At 7:30 p.m. the second night of preliminary competition begins. The first seven ladies (Catan Fashion flight) will compete in Swimsuit, contestants 8 to 15 (Newman Technology flight) will perform their Talents and the final ladies (Constance Care Home Healthcare flight) will answer an Onstage Question and compete in Evening Gown.

Again, at the show’s conclusion the preliminary winners will go to a press conference while the rest of the contestants will quickly change out of their gowns and briefly visit with the audience.

THURSDAY JUNE 14, 2007

As you should already suspect, Thursday begins with Talent rehearsals at 10 a.m. for the final seven women (Constance Care Home Healthcare flight). At 11 a.m. all the contestants meet at Skyline Chili for lunch. The theatre closes to the public at 11:30 a.m. and the contestants return for a closed dress rehearsal from 1 to 5 p.m.

Supper from M.J. Mulligans at Paisley Park is served within the theatre and then the ladies begin preparing for the final night of preliminary competition. At 7:30 p.m. the show begins with the first seven (Catan Fashions flight) competing in Evening Wear and Onstage Question; contestants 8 through 14 (Newman Technology flight) compete in Swimsuit and the final ladies (Constance Care Home Healthcare flight) in Talent.

In addition to this night’s preliminary winners going to a press conference, all the preliminary winners and other scholarship winners will meet onstage for photos while everyone else changes out of their gowns and briefly visits with the audience.

FRIDAY JUNE 15, 2007

For the very first time, private interviews are taking place on Friday, which is great for women who excel in onstage competition, but bad news for women who count on the interview to make the judges fall in love with them.

Contestants 1 through 11 will all meet the judges (receiving line style) at 9:45 a.m., with the first interview beginning at 10 a.m.; all the contestants will have lunch with their hostess and/or chaperone. Contestants 12 through 21 will all meet the judges at 1:30 p.m., with contestant #12 beginning her interview at 1:45 p.m.

Last year because July 4th fell during Miss Ohio week, contestants were given private time with their family, friends and/or local directors. This was extraordinary, considering contestants cannot otherwise speak with anyone in person without the presence of their chaperone. Apparently last year went well enough because once again this wonderful opportunity is being given. From 4:30 to 6 p.m. contestants are free to have dinner where ever and with whom they want. (I highly recommend having take-out in a hotel room, as opposed to going to a restaurant; it’s better use of the time given and more private.)

Miss contestants must be back in the theatre, with their chaperone by 6:30 p.m. to watch the Outstanding Teen Pageant which begins at 7 p.m. Friends, family and E.D.s may sit with their contestant, as long as a chaperone is close by.

SATURDAY JUNE 16 2007

At 9:15 a.m. the contestants will leave their host home for a final time. They will have a wonderful brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Mansfield Women’s Club. Since Miss Ohio is only televised on Saturday night an all important closed TV rehearsal begins at 1 p.m.

At 5 p.m. Brown Derby Roadhouse serves a meal in the theatre and the contestants begin preparing for the Miss Ohio Finale which begins at 8 p.m.! After a new Miss Ohio is crowned photos are taken of the Top 5 and the winner is rushed off to a press conference.

The other twenty ladies are taken to the Holiday Inn for an After-party. Unfortunately there is no immediate visitation, and I hope the waiting time for the contestants to be introduced and “handed over” to their friends and families is much shorter than it has been for the last two years. This can be awkward and disappointing, especially for friends and family who have traveled to see a specific contestant, but can not attend the after party. Thus, it’s important contestants let their fans know how Saturday night will work, whether or not they win.

SUNDAY, JUNE 17, 2007

On Sunday morning our new Miss Ohio begins her reign with a 9:30 a.m. breakfast with her parents, local E.D. and Miss Ohio Board. At 11 a.m. she will have a meeting to discuss her job description with the same group of people. She will have her first appearance at Richland Mall at 2 p.m.

CMN Celebrations!

This weekend Children’s Miracle Network hospitals are celebrating the donations they have received over the year.

FOX Toledo will be broadcasting the 25th Annual Celebration/Telethon of St. Vincent Mercy Children's Hospital from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow. As the Face of FOX Toledo, I’ll be downtown “on the docks” with the live entertainment and I’ll also have the pleasure of briefly talking to Miss Northwestern Ohio, Becky Minger, about the Miss America partnership. (I believe the interview will happen sometime in the 11 o'clock hour.)

According to their blogs, Miss Clayland, Allie Krucek and Miss Maple City, Roberta Camp, will also be helping with the CMN broadcasts in their respective areas.

Allie writes,

On Sunday June 3rd, I will be taking part in the CMN Celebration Telethon at Akron Children's Hospital. I will be answering phones and will be interviewed on-air about the partnership between Miss America and CMN. I'm very excited about this great opportunity. Please tune in to WBNX TV 55 (the new CW in Akron) or WMFD TV 68 in Mansfield to see me between 1pm and 3pm. Also, please call in to make a donation to CMN. The pledge numbers will be 330-543-0981 and toll free 1-866-543-0981.

And Roberta writes,

All weekend, I am scheduled to be a guest entertainer, pledge taker and volunteer at Columbus Children's Hospital for the Children's Miracle Network Telethon! It will be televised Saturday June 2 & Sunday June 3 here in Columbus by my "alma mater" - WBNS 10TV. If you can catch it locally, please be sure to watch and if possible; make a charitable donation to one of the largest supporters & contributing organizations of nearly 17 million child patients & hospitals throughout our nation.

If you don’t get FOX Toledo, WBNX in Akron, WMFD in Mansfield or WBNS in Columbus, do tune in and find a channel local to you carrying a broadcast. Also, leave a comment if other Miss Ohio contestants are somehow participating.

What is ABC Thinking?

-----VS.

In between continuing to discuss the drama of the recent Miss Universe pageant, fans on a Miss USA/Universe message board took the time to point out that Miss America folks should be upset because ABC was broadcasting a spelling bee!

Indeed, the broadcasting company that “dumped” Miss America a couple years ago, forcing the pageant to find temporary refuge on Country Music Television, aired the two hour Scripps National Spelling Bee last night.

Don’t leave me comments about the educational value of broadcasting a spelling bee because the reality is- that’s not what it’s about in TV. It’s about MONEY! Could a spelling bee really have brought in more sponsorship and viewership than Miss America?

I didn’t watch the spelling bee to see who the advertisers were, because:
A. I am and have always been a horrible speller… so the last thing I’m going to do is watch a bunch of boring junior highers who make me feel stupid! B. I was outside finally planting my vegetable garden.

If you did watch the spelling bee, I’d love to hear about what the commercials consisted of, or general thoughts on why Miss America is denied an annual television home, yet spelling bees and bad sitcom reruns get air time!
