This comes up a lot in Virginia, although people don't seem to be too concerned about it. Nearly every Virginia pageant I have done this year has had the ED of another local sitting on the panel, and it can be a good or a bad thing, I guess. You can just hope they remember the good things and are not biased!

ReplyDeleteThis is yet another of my polls that I have yet to cast a vote in! lol!
My first thought is always that all the numbers are averaged. It’s a subjective activity and the outcome should just be accepted and not blamed on one person; that’s mathematical ignorance. Not to mention that the highest and lowest are thrown out anyway... at least they used to be.
On the other hand, I'm sure judges talk even though they're not supposed to! Not to mention how uncomfortable an interview could become if a contestant and judge have a history, be it positive or negative.
Then there’s the fact that ANYONE involved with the program likely has preconceived notions of the women, not just the E.D.s IE: sponsors, former contestants, former volunteers are all asked to judge and I know for certain people from all of those categories read this blog and keep up with the system!
But there’s also the sinister idea that beyond having a bias, an E.D. might pick someone their own representative can beat at the next level of competition, whether it’s unconscious or blatant. I know people who truly believe that happens.
*sigh*
I see both sides.
Although my poll clearly shows that most people do not like E.D.s judging, I know the excuse is that judges are in short supply and I honestly don’t see this issue changing anytime soon…
Although I can definately see where contestants and others are coming from not liking L.E.D.'s judging, I would like to think that if the judges felt bias for or against contestants, they would excuse themselves from judging. I compare it to being on a jury. I can honestly say that if I did, I would do the right thing and excuse myself.
