Dig, baby, dig! That contradicts her onstage answer. Moreover, if her sister is and activist and they differ in opinion on this issue, she should be well prepared to talk about it!
She said: “It did cost me my crown...I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I said what I feel. I stated an opinion that was true to myself and that’s all I can do.”
It didn't cost her the crown; she wasn't in the lead prior to the final question. I agree with Laura, a commenter below, that it was a tricky question because it wasn't about her opinion, it was more of a fact-based issue. Ultimately, SHE DIDN'T ANSWER THE QUESTION!!! Everyone is up in arms about her opinion, but what she said was illogical; she proved to be a poor speaker and failed to listen to the question. Those are two critical pageant errors.

ReplyDeleteWell, I’m in LA, not Vegas. Regardless, moving to a large city has not “warped my brain;” I have been vocal with my strong support of human rights and homosexual equality for years!
ReplyDeleteThere was a time when “mainstream America” believed they could enslave people. “Mainstream America” once denied women and ethnic minorities the rights to vote and own property, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
I am not interested in your mainstream America because I know my generation will see the day our government does not discriminate against people for who they love! The most popular defense for your bigotry is religion; to that I remind you that there is supposed to be separation of church and state in our government. You can practice whatever faith you choose, but leave it out of government documentation and human rights laws!
As for Perez, I understand he is extremely inflammatory, but calling him a “gay fruitcake” is just as classless as he often is. I almost didn’t publish your comment because that phrase, but I wanted to respond to it.
Even if you think I’m “warped,” I’ll take that over being a member of your narrow-minded mainstream.
I love that she says she shouldn't have gotten that question- honey, you are pulling questions out of a bowl. It wasn't some conspiracy where the judges wanted YOU to have that particular question. Additionally, you are Miss California! Representing a state that has been dealing with questions and debates over same-sex marriage for almost 40 years! How is that question not fair? In my opinion, it's just as relevant as foreign aid, domestic violence, or the healthcare debate! Guess what- gays are discriminated against or told to keep quiet in the military, carry huge international stigmas about AIDS just because of their orientation, and are frequently denied access to their significant other in the hospital all because they don't have the piece of paper that heterosexual couples have among numerous other challenges!

ReplyDeleteWhat kills me is that she asked herself "should I have gotten that question?" Talk about sicking your stiletto farther down your mouth! It's clear no one prepped her prior to that interview... or the the onstage question for that matter! LOL!
Living in Louisville Kentucky I would say I'm in 'maintstream America' about as much as you can be. However I was born and raised in a much more rural part of Kentucky.
ReplyDeleteCalling someone a 'gay fruit cake' and saying someone has a 'warped brain' is offensive no matter where you live. Miss CA has the right to her opinion (as I have my right to an opinion of Miss CA), however this question didn't really ask for her opinion on gay marriage. It asked if other states should follow suit with having a vote. She didn't answer the question at all, if you ask me. Perhaps not quite as bad as AZ, but still pretty bad. Going in to the final question she was 3rd and she ended up 2nd. Clearly her answer didn't hurt her. However if I was a judge I probably would have given her a 5 or 6. If she'd actually answered the question AND given her opinion, I probably would have bumped it up.
On the actual issue of gay marriage, if your church doesn't want to allow gay marriages to take place, I have no problem with that. But keep it in your church. A government, however, should show equality to all people.
And I have one final thought. This issue really boils down to one person loving and caring for another person. And I can't see how any person's God would have any problem with love.
